Opposition stages walkout in NA over PIA privatization, new taxes


ISLAMABAD: Combined Opposition in Lower house of Parliament staged walkout from National Assembly on Tuesday against privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and imposition of new taxes.
“Earlier, Opposition leader in National Assembly (NA), Syed Khursheed Shah while speaking from the floor of the lower house criticized Prime Minister Nawz Sharif for not attending assembly proceedings. He said that opposition will not allow to impose new taxes Rs40 billion.
A week earlier, the centre government had imposed Rs 40 billion more taxes by imposing 5-10 per cent regulatory duty on import of 61 items, increasing duty by 5pc on another 289 items and levying 1pc additional customs duty on thousands of other items.
Talking to reporters outside parlieamentm, Khursheed Shah said that opposition will not allow government to privatize PIA and other government institutions.
He said issuing one ordinance after another was inappropriate and the practice must stop now. “Think and understand before making any decision,” he added.
He questioned as to why there is haste in the matter of PIA’s privatization. “Is this haste actually an attempt for someone to make a windfall out of this deal?” he said.
Those who staged walkout from National Assembly including Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Muttahida Qaumi Movement and JI.
